The scammers have been using a caller ID to show the Baltimore City Sheriff's Department to appear legitimate. The Sheriff's Office is warning residents saying they will never contact anyone by phone to gather money.

The scammers ask people to pay through electronic payment methods such as Apple Pay, Cash-App, Venmo, or similar means to steal funds from potential victims, officials say.

If you receive such a call, note the information given including the number displayed on your caller ID and hang up. Never give any personal or financial information to unknown callers. If you wish to report a fraudulent phone call, please contact your local police agency or dial 911, police say.
